Wonderful Wackiness of the Web

Hi All,

I was reading an article on the the Sydney Morning Herald website about the most successful viral videos on the web.

I thought this was a good point to post the wacky videos that have epic viewer counts and also some less known but still hilarious movies.

Free Hugs Campaign-Now this is a cool way to get coverage of your band. This guy walks around Sydney holding a sign "Free Hugs". I love how the first person to take up his offer is a little old lady. Boo to the police and security that tried to stop him. They collected 10,000 signatures in a petition just to show the cops where to go. Its great to see such a simple thing bring happiness in a sad world. (MUST SEE!!!)

The Star Wars Kid-One of the first and most popular viral videos ever. I remember seeing this while still in High School (2003 and back). Shows a kid who has watched star wars episode 1 Darth Maul scenes too often.

Numa Numa-Who would have thought when Gary Brolsma posted a video of himself singing and dancing while singing to a Romanian pop song would lead to worldwide fame. All i can say is after you watch it a few times you too will start to sing along. Thousands of imitators have tried to copy but nothing beats the original.

Exploding Whale-What do you do when you have a washed ashore dead 8 ton whale thats starting to smell pretty bad. If you bury it it may be again uncovered and no one wants to cut it up in smaller pieces. I can say in a truly male thought process, they decided it would be wisest to rig it with explosives and let the seaguls sort out the rest. Hilarity followed as the camera crew and observers were then rained in blubber one chunk big enough to collapse part of a car. They ended up burying the remains. Trust me this is not graphic at all. Warning: Fuzzy quality

John West Add-If only this was the most efficient way to catch fish. I would be in the wrong business.

Kollaboration 2001-A cool breakdancing video. The best part is the guy kind of seems nerdy.

The Shinning Recut-A very clever parody of the Shinning (My favourite horror movie). Turning something very scary into a feel good kind of movie.

Evolution of dance- A comedian does a wonderful act showing the diversity of music and the dancing that follows.

Where In the world is Matt?- This guy makes an awesome compilation of himself dancing in amazing places all around the world. Makes me wish i was a boom operator on getaway.

Here is some other news

Reg Reagan would love the fact that journalists are bringing back the biff as seen in the Walkley awards recently.

And after having to suffer the dregs of Australian music (The Veronicas, Rogue Traders etc.) its good to know that the majority of Australians still have good taste in music. The ABC conducted a poll on Australias favourite Album. Here is the results:

1. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd (1973)
2. Grace - Jeff Buckley (1994)
3. OK Computer - Radiohead (1997)
4. Abbey Road - The Beatles (1969)
5. Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles (1967)
6. Nevermind - Nirvana (1991)
7. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin (1971)
8. Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Red Hot Chilli Peppers (1991)
9. Bat Out Of Hell - Meatloaf (1977)
10. Joshua Tree - U2 (1987)

GO PINK FLOYD. All i can say is perhaps Zeppelin should be higher but thats just me.

Cheers

Glen

p.s. Please comment about any of the stuff. It makes the effort somewhat worthwhile.

2 Great CDs

As i sit around the house bored out of my mind waiting for my next paycheck to clear i have decided to make a post.

But wait a minute Glen, what are you going to write about
-your failed movember attempt
-whinge about something (tempting) or
-recount what you did yesterday

Stuff that, i am going to write about something interesting.

Ever since JB Hi-Fi opened in Hornsby i have been buying CDs often. Probably one a week.
So here are 2 CDs i think were great.

AUDIOSLAVE - Self Titled

I rant on about this CD alot. The band is comprised of
-Chris Cornell (Former Soundgarden vocalist)
-Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine minus De La Rocha)

When i first heard "Cochise" i had no idea this was a supergroup combination of 2 other bands i like. Aside from the recent chilli peppers work, I think this is one of the best rock bands around today. If you have never heard of this band i strongly recommend getting this album before Out of exile or Revelations. The album has both heavy riffy music but also mellow ballad like songs. The vocals are incredible, infact i think Cornell changed his style in later albums to save his vocal cords. Tom Morello has plenty of his high note solos and Brad and Tim keep a solid beat.

Highlight Tracks

1) Cochise-Based around an Indian Chief going on a rampage against the US Cavalry. And it sounds exactly like that. This track got the band started and rightly so.

2) Show me how to live-My all time favourite Audioslave track. Listen to it a couple of times and i bet you will be screaming the chorus. The funny thing is i have no idea what the song is about. It uses plenty of Christian references but its subject is hotly debated by fans. It also has a great video clip of a car chase.

3) Like a stone-Chris Cornells vocal talent shines through this track. A very different song then the first 2. The subject is quite sad, an old man waiting to die and be with his dead family and friends.

4) Shadow On The Sun-Ever since hearing this song in "Collateral" i have loved this song. Both heavy and relaxed moments in the song fit the movie perfectly.

5) Exploder-This track speeds the album up to a heavier sound after 2 quieter songs. I love the ending "But'n'dah'du But'n'dah'du". (If you have heard it this jibberish will make sense)

METALLICA-S&M (Symphony and Metallica)

A brave move by the most popular Heavy Metal band in the world. This is a 2 hour live recording of Metallica performing with Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Its simply an amazing live performance blending modern day rock with an orchestra. The complement each other incredibly and are a great remix of the already great songs. I just wish they could tour the world. Seeing this in the opera house would be incredible.

Highlight tracks

1) Battery-The songs original acoustic guitar is replaced by the strings section of the orchestra and sounds awesome. The song talks about the influence of anger on someone.

2) Master of Puppets- An epic song at almost 9 minutes features everythin good about Metallica.

3) For whom the bell tolls-Based around some soldiers in the spanish civil war, a great song.

4) Fuel- Headbanging gives me a headache, but this song just asks for it

The Audioslave Album is easy to find and is often in the $10 bargain bin at JB, a must buy.
S&M is generally harder to find and you will probably have to pay top dollar for it, I found it for $20 in the city after searching for ages.

Movie Review: Flags of our Fathers

I went and saw Flags of our Fathers on sunday and must say i was very impressed. The entire premise of the movie is based around the picture above. Some say its the most reprinted photo ever. After seeing many WW2 films (with the typical regard that the Allied Forces was America and no one else matters) i was expecting a movie adorned with the American flag would be a great let down.

Amazingly I was completely (and gladly) wrong. The movie tells of the tremendous horrors of the Iwo Jima landings and its effect on the men who survived. It also tells of how wartime heroes were used as an instrument to raise much needed funds during the war.

The focus was very much on the individual men rather then the overall campaign as the story jumped all over the place from the future and past events.

Clint Eastwood has definately earned my respect as a director.

The obvious comparison question is how does it rate next to "Saving Private Ryan". Well i liked ryan better but its probably close by. Easily the best movie on the pacific campaign, beats thin red line hands down.

I give it Four and a Half stars.

Andrew Dentons new movie "God on my side"

Hi everyone,

Im excited to go see a now documantary made by Andrew Denton called God on my side.
I found out about it from a review in the saturday Sydney Morning Herald By Paul Barnes.

Here is the link to read it yourself

For a better review check out the SMH video review by Garry Maddox here

A certain phrase in the barnes article upset me so i wrote him an email and currently await his reply.

If you have some spare time read his article then my email below, if you want to write to him his email is below

Subject "take a closer walk with thee" article

pbyrnes@attglobal.net

Dear Paul Byrnes,

My name is Glen Cooper, I am a 21 year old Uni student living in Hornsby. Thank you for writing your article on Andrew Dentons new documentary. I am a regular reader of SMH and was glad to see you review a less known movie on a quite significant topic. As unpopular as religion is today thank you for bringing it up for discussion.

As you can most likely tell I am a Christian and I am sure you were expecting some correspondence since you attached your email address.

I am not going to preach to convert you but rather had a few statements regarding your review. (I have not seen the movie, but i intend to, I am sure there were some forceful/hyperactive evangelists in the doco).

It was regarding the statement

"But it doesn’t prevent him getting clear statements of their dislike for muslims and gay people, and their desire to see the 'end of days' sooner rather then later. There's more than one way to expose christian bigots and Denton lets them do it in their own words.
"

I am unsure how well you know your source material on christian beliefs The Bible. I just wanted to say a few things that perhaps were not explained in the film or to you.

Regarding christian dislike for muslims
Jesus said in Matthew 4:10 "Worship the lord your God, and serve him only"
God instructs us that there is only one God, all other gods are false. In this light, Christians only believe other christians will be saved. There is nothing christians have specifically against Muslims that they don’t also believe about Hindus, Bhuddists, Atheists or even Jews. Basically all these people serve others and not God. The people on the doco may dislike muslims but that is an incorrect belief, all christians want to see them converted and share in the faith we have (not because we are egotistic but that we believe that our faith is the one true faith).

Regarding dislike for gay people
Paul the apostle wrote in Romans 1:24-25 "Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.......men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflames with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men"
In an ever growing tolerant society it is no surprise that christians are criticized for seeing homosexuality as a sin (against gods teaching). This tolerance makes certain rules seem unjust to many. Christians view that god as creator and law giver instructed us to only have sexual relations as he deemed between man and women in marriage. All other acts are seen as an incorrect use of sex.

Regarding the "Desire to see the end of days"
Revelation 21:3-4 "And i heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away" written by John the Apostle after a vision or Revelation about the end of this world. Christians desire to see the end of this world as all sickness, death, war and injustice will end and God will be with his people. Even atheists would agree that sounds better then now. We do not look forward to people going to hell, this saddens us and the verse said God will wipe away every tear.

I dont want to sound preachy but i am a strong believer that whatever a christian teaches it should not be their own words but Gods. I hope this information is informative to you.

I must express i was offended when you called christians "bigots".

Now i understand that bigot means a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions differing from their own. This is a word that could be seen as appropriate for the situation but it has a great deal of negative connotations associated with it. It would have been much more appropriate to say "there's more then one way to expose christians different beliefs".

Your wording gave a negative opinion against Christians.

My wording showed tolerance of others opinion (whether you believe in Christianity or not). A more neutral and fair statement.

Please consider when handling such a delicate topic, was bias against a religion necessary to give a fair film review.

I would be very keen to hear your thoughts in response.

Regards

Glen C

YouTube Sells out

I guess all you can say to Chad Hurley and Steven Chen (YouTube founders) is congratulations.

Google just bought out the popular video sharing website for roughly $2.2 Billion AUD.

Shows all those critics that creative ideas on the internet can be very limited (this blog) or can make you a billionnaire before you hit 30.

I guess these guys probably copped a lot of flac when they started the site, who would want to watch random user created videos (mmm.........Me).

I just hope the great website doesnt get overtaken with annoying adds (eg lots of flash adds, preloader adds and my personal worst nightmare commercials you have to watch before watching your video.................ifilm anyone) This would kill YouTube.

So please google dont kill such a great website...........you have enough money you greedy buggers.

The videos from this post are thanks to Tim and BJ. You guys rock!!

Check out Elastic Girl she must have no spine (look for something funny in the background too)

A funny mentos and coke joke

oh yeah and here is the new Koenigsegg CCX Top Gear Review

Wednesday, October 04, 2006

Ahh to Dream

The amazing car you are looking at is a Koenigsegg CCX.

Now i know what you are thinking, what a mouthful, well you will have to blame the swedes for that. Yep its not fresh out of Ferrari. Its Swedish.

Shows you there are some awesome Swedish designers besides the boxy Volvos of the past.

Unbelievably the car has stats like this

Acceleration: 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) 3.1 seconds
Top speed: 418 km/h (260 mph)

All coming from a 4700 Ford V8 engine

Holden may be the king of the mountain to most aussies, but i will always back the Ford

This car is so awesome its made the fastest lap time on TOP GEAR. Possible the best car show ever. By the way it beat the once 1st place Pagani Zonda

Check out the top gear test run.

also check out an earlier review of another CC model.

quite sadly i can say i will never ever see one since they cost around US$650,000, oh well fossil fuel would run out soon anyway, a bombish 96 Magna will have to do.

and while you are at it watch some cars play soccer.

Ridiculous amount of spare time

Hey Everyone

As I continue to have my work pile up for me i have grown envious of people with a ridiculous amount of spare time, imagine what you could do

perhaps like mixing multiple speeches of George W Bush so he is singing Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2

Check it out

Or this guy who took a picture of himself everyday for 6 years to see how much he changed. Kind of freaky.

We all know how great a flipbook is in times of procrastination.

If you know me well then you have probably heard of my fascination with rube goldberg machines. Now thats an awesome waste of time

And indeed many would say a blog is a waste of time

But you know what, ultimately i might as well go to work so i can buy a cool light emitting t-shirt

so i think i might just do that

see ya

brain bucket
(Canada) Helmet.
brain sponge
(US) Any combat hat that does not provide protection. (e.g. A Boonie hat)
bubblehead
Any person serving on a submarine or in the Submarine Service
Cigarette Soup
(US Army) Onion Soup, because it looks like what you get when you fill an ashtray with water.

I must be a possum

Now i guess you are reading the title wondering what on earth is Glen going on about he looks nothing like a big, hairy, tree climbing rat.

The problem is i am nocturnal.

On average i go to sleep around 2-3am. The problem is I usually have to wake at around 7am. This sleep problem usually makes me a mess until around midday. I cant help it

I blame this on

1) My Job (you try working to midnight then immediately going to sleep, its not possible)
2) DVDs (i usually will watch a movie or x-files or something before i go to sleep which makes 3am arrive very fast)
3) the peace and quiet of night (i love that i am never interupted late at night, no nagging, no telemarketer calls)
4) since the age of 12 i have never been told to go to sleep, so i choose not to
5) eating dinner after midnight (once again related to working till midnight)

But the funny thing is once i get a proper job i wont have all these problems because a will arrive home exhausted.

Funny how things turn out

Cheers

5 years on

Well 5 years have passed since that fateful day of September 11

There have been few times in my life when i can remember exactly what i was doing this far from the time. I wish it could of been a more joyous time like landing on the moon, or the end of WW2.

I was up late and heard on the news reports of an "accidental" plane crash. Sounded like a crazy accountant wanted to fly his cessna into the building. Not an enormous terrorist attack. Waking up the next day a saw the horrid pictures of people jumping and the building falling down.

Indeed there is no horror to match such a tragedy. I remember thinking we have entered the new millenium not the great world we think we are.

5 years on are we "rocking in the free world"?

The answer is indeed no!!

Bombings the world over, every weakness has been targetted. Terrorism runs free. I will never forget the bombings in Bali. It appears fortress australia has its weaknesses. Terrorism works much like guerilla warfare in vietnam. It follows no geneva convention, its not a predictable structure.

How has the world combatted this problem. War in afganistan has shown little progress in what many could call a revenge attack.

Was in Iraq was started on dubious reasons. The WMD story got everything started and to this day what has happened, people have died on both sides and a dictator has been captured. Oh by the way what has happened with Saddam. The attitude seems to be "like anyone cares". Criminal or not his detainment should be no differant to any other.

The allies should pride themselves on treatment of POWs after the horror in Japan and Germany in WW2.

Possibly the saddest thing is to this day people in Iraq are dying for this "crusade on terrorism" and the people are losing interest. Ask someone in australia if they know of anyone dying in Iraq, as opposed to the price of petrol or if we should rename the bathurst 1000.

Will this world ever see peace.

I think as long as man desires what they dont have it will remain.

Thankfully the bible tells gives an answer to this problem
Ecclesiastes 12:14
For God will bring every deed into judgement,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.

God (the Ultimate Judge) has seen and known everything and will give the rewards to such evil deeds.

Not only terrorists have sinned, everyone has but through christ we have hope

Colossians 1:13-14

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

If you ever wonder if justice will be met in a messed up world, have faith that God is watching and he is just. But also consider that the same just god who will deliver punishment is also a loving God who gave so that we might live past this world.

Audioslave Vs Iron Maiden

Well its been a while

And isnt it great to see someone trying to advertise on my last post. Should i lock up the anonymous ability to post?

Trying to make a cheap buck

I think i will delete it

Got 2 new CDs yesterday

Audioslave - Revelations

If i could sum it up with one word it would be "disappointed".None of the tracks really picked up as something unique, something i havent heard before, i kept thinking it might be like shadow on the sun where it starts slow and gets nice and heavy. In my opinion the first album was awesome with most of the tracks being great. If anyone said what CD should i buy, it would be my first recommendation. Cochise, Shadow on the Sun, I am the highway, like a stone and exploder were all great. A really great heavy and also melodic sound. The second cd out of exile was good but not quite as good as the former cd. Be yourself, out of exile and your time has come were enjoyable.

If the first album had anything revelations is missing its energy listen to "Exploder" then listen to "Original fire". I hope you see what i mean, it just doesnt seem inspired.

I got the special version with the dvd where Tom Morello said they are working now like a band together. After touring they now know how to work well together.

Do you think touring has made them a bit soft, a less intense high energy sound and lyrics?

I know this sounds negative but over the last 2 years Audioslave have been in my top fav bands, I am writing this cos i am simply disappointed

On a more positive side i also got A matter of life and death by Iron Maiden

In the past i never got into them out of ignorance or judging the book by its cover, I saw some of the covers portraying Eddie this weird zombie guy and heard about the song "666 the number of the beast" and thought i wouldnt like it.

But thanks to persistent mates (Julian, Tim Rob and George) i gave it a try and really enjoy it. They have simple lyrics about cool stuff on this album. Stuff like the manhatan project, D-Day landings, Religion and War and forgotten soldiers. And to tie that all together they have 3 guitarists who all share lead and rhythm roles. And unlike so many bands of today, they can pull of awesome solos. These days the guitar solo is slowly dieing so i love to hear this stuff.

For a year i have been anticipating the audioslave release, Glenjamin and i even argued when it was going to be released (FYI I was right that it would be released early september, Glenjamin said it was coming early 2007, shows that a fan knows more then JB staff) .
Getting sidetracked (Glenji usually beats me in arguements, a need to savour the victory)

What i mean to say is that the album i long expected was disappoing and the impulse purchase was awesome.

If your interested check out "These colours dont run" "The longest day" and "For the greater good of God"

ps I do realise that they are quite different bands

whinge session: Cash Flow

Well after the short term comfort of my tax return, it has finally disappeared. This has been a tough year money wise with increased cost of petrol, uni costs (photocopies), train fare rises and too many meals at charlies in Wahroonga. Its also 21st season so i am taking a lot of time of work.

Which brings me to my dilemma.

I love music and I have never gone to a big live concert. Mainly cos i cant afford it and there are no bands i like touring.

Well no there is Pearl Jam, Live, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Eric Clapton touring Aus in the next 5 months.

I want to go to them all but i cant afford any (possibly Live or pearl jam cos there the cheapest).

Just wondering what live bands have you seen and what did you think of the band live?

Ponder This: Album Lyrics

This thought randomly came to me

Have you ever had a song you really like to sing and then realise that you made your own words up for it.

The most common has to be the line "A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido." from Nirvana Smells like teen spirit. Peoples versions of this line are varied and usually arent even real words but rather jiberish.

As a kid I always said "Dirty deeds and the Thunder Jeep" for AC/DC song Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Just say it like its in the song, It fits kind of.

Can you think of any others?

ps Teen spirit was actually a type of deoderant in the early 90s. A girl told Kurt Kobain that he smells like teen spirit. Thats how they came up with the name.

Off the Web: Angry Alien

Got some spare time to waste

Blog Hole Sun is born

Hello and Welcome to Blog Hole Sun

My name is Glen (call me Coops, Glennos, Glennoes, koopa or whatever floats your boat).
This is my second official attempt at making a blog. My first blog was so good that it was all over in about a month and I completely forgot what it was called.

Im a 21 year old Queensland Kiwi halfbreed living in the best city in Australia. I have almost finished a Degree in Diagnostic Radiography and work for the worst pizza company in Australia.

Since my blog was ordinary last time i thought what could i add that is interesting

Music and Movie Reviews (sorry but this doesnt include romantic comedy or RnB)

Glens Bargain buys (I pride myself on finding cds and dvds at cheap prices, I would love to know if you can beat my prices)

Complaint of the day (I love to complain and doing it this way means my friends dont have to hear it)

Off the Web (The wonderful web does have a few pearls amongst endless rubbish that doesnt deserve being printed on paper)

hopefully i can think of some other cool ideas

In case you were wondering the name of this blog alludes to one of my favourite songs by soundgarden.

Cheers
